“I call my design style transitional,” says Fort Lauderdale interior designer Joyce Shore. “It’s not contemporary, nor is it traditional, but a natural, intriguing blend of both. I might pair a contemporary sofa with an antique coffee table; a state-of-the-art entertainment center with more conventional area rugs. It opens up all kinds of creative avenues and gives me the freedom to integrate a client’s favorite family heirlooms and collectibles with the latest furnishings and fabrics.

“I have designed interiors nationwide for clients, but concentrate mainly on Florida. It’s no secret that the weather is what defines Florida. Add to that an abundance of waterfront property and golf courses, and you have an interior designer’s dream landscape. (Personally, I love Florida because of the sunshine and fresh orange juice!)

“The most significant design element in Florida is the light quality. Colors look different –– brighter, bolder, clearer, more intense –– because everything is saturated with light. And at no time of year is this more apparent than now. So, here are a few of my summertime favorites:”

Calypso Collection from Manuel Canovas. These outdoor fabrics beat the heat with their cool colors and airy patterns of seashells, shapes of coral, cabana stripes and koi.

Macao Garden Seats from Baker Furniture. What could be more festive than bright spots of Coral around the patio? Cast from resin, these fun, practical and easy-to-move seats double as tables wherever needed.

Cracked IceTM Chair from McGuire Furniture Co. What happens when a high-end rattan company takes one of its classic icons, circa 1968, and manufactures it today in metal for the great outdoors. You get a chair whose warm hues of bronze, cayenne or seashell white won’t wilt under the Florida sun.

WAVE Hammock by Royal Britania. This is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Standing on a single point, this ultramodern hammock gives the impression of floating in a sea of aquamarine or among the clouds.

Canasta & Crinoline Collections by B&B Italia. Interesting shapes and heights; natural fibers; traditional woven patterns all combine to create a distinctly contemporary look. Formal, yet comfortable, these two collections raise the bar when it comes to communing with Mother Nature.

“And finally, one of my favorite ways to spend a day is browsing along Fort Lauderdale’s famous tree-lined Las Olas Boulevard. There are dozens of shops, antique stores and galleries where you can find a wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary art, accessories and collectibles.

“There’s Cote Provence for Anduze pottery, gardenware and table linens; Objets d’Art for amazing and unique items from around the world; and Casa Chameleon for handsome polycarbonate barware from Metropolitan and ‘green’ goodies such as serving trays made from recycled glass.

“When I’m ready to relax and reflect on my day, I head for YOLO (You Only Live Once) for a glass of Chardonnay and a salad in the garden patio. It’s the perfect ending to a beautiful sunshiny day.”

Joyce Shore has been featured in Florida Design, The Miami Herald, Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel and spotlighted on HGTV’s Designer Challenge.

Many of us knew her name long before we had a chance to meet her in person. She is a great designer and a true professional. In the design community, she is best known for her unmatched dedication to the interior design industry and her extensive, life-long public and community service.

It came as no great surprise when the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) announced last May that Joyce Shore was one of the five members that has been officially inducted into the ASID College of Fellows. The 2011 class of fellows was honored in June 2011 at ASID Design Awards, an annual celebration ceremony at the Neo- Con World’s Trade Fair.

Fellowship is the highest honor ASID bestows on its members. Elevation to fellowship not only recognizes the achievement of an individual designer, but also elevates, before the public and the profession, a model interior designer who has made a significant contribution to the profession and to the society.

Joyce Shore has been in the field of interior design since 1978. She is a licensed interior designer with Joyce Shore Interiors in Ft. Lauderdale. She is also LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and CAPS (Certified Aging in Place Specialist) certified. After holding numerous positions with the ASID Florida South Chapter, Shore served on the ASID Board of Directors. She then became involved in interior design legislation and was twice appointed to the Florida Board of Architecture and Interior Design. Shore was chairperson of the board when the Institute for Justice filed suit with the state, claiming that the interior design law was unconstitutional. Her testimony and commitment are credited as instrumental in the U.S. Appeals Court’s decision to uphold the statute. She also represents Florida on the NCIDQ Delegates Council. Shore was publically recognized and received numerous awards and citations for her service to the profession and the society. She was inducted into the Chapter’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

Let’s not forget to mention that, in addition to Shore’s accomplishments, services, and involvements, she is a wonderful, talented human being. So, I could not resist asking Joyce a few personal questions and here are her answers:

What are three words to describe your personality: Positive, persistent, and stubborn (the third kindly added by her husband!)

If you could work with only one color, what would it be? It would be in the blue-green family- calming, and reminds me of Florida’s sky and ocean

Favorite design style: Art Deco-classical but clean. I can’t say I love all of the pieces, but some of the old classic Art Deco designs are wonderful.

What can you live without: Cheap Chinese furniture

Do you have a favorite quote? “The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.”

What is one place you have not been that you want to visit? I would love to visit Machu Picchu. I have been fortunate because I have been able to travel a great deal and see most of the major continents, but I have never been to South America.

ASID Florida South is proud to have a new Fellow among our members. Congratulations, Joyce Shore!

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 10, 2011) | The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) today announced that five members have been officially inducted into the ASID College of Fellows. The title of Fellow, the highest honor a member can receive from ASID, is given in recognition of outstanding service and contributions to the Society, the profession and the interior design industry. The 2011 Class of Fellows will be honored on June 13, 2011, at Celebration – The ASID Design Awards, being held at ASID@NeoCon. The 2011 Class of Fellows:

Jamie Drake, FASID
Renowned for his masterful use of color, Drake frequently ranks among America’s best interior designers. His impressive roster of clients boasts Madonna and Michael Bloomberg, who, when elected Mayor of New York, engaged Drake to renovate and restore Gracie Mansion, as well as redesign various rooms at City Hall. A member of the Interior Design Hall of Fame and recipient of numerous awards for design excellence, Drake has also designed fabrics and other luxury products for top manufacturers.

Currently a member of the ASID Board of Directors, Dufner also has served on national councils and committees, as well as leadership positions in the ASID Michigan Chapter.

Janice Linster, FASID
A founding partner of Studio Hive in Minneapolis, Linster is a dynamic presence in the ASID Minnesota Chapter and the Minneapolis interior design community. She received the University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award for her ongoing work with students in the College of Design and on the college’s advisory board. Formerly a member of the ASID Board of Directors, she has twice chaired national committees and held numerous leadership positions in her chapter.

Looking toward the future, more and more people––and not just seniors––are rethinking how to make their living space safer and more comfortable.

When the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990, terms such as “handicapped accessible” and “barrier-free,” were the buzzwords used to describe spaces for special-needs people. However, as time passed, designers discovered that the “universal design” solutions that make life more comfortable for people with disabilities just make life more comfortable––period! For everybody!

The emphasis is on creating designs that enable people of all ages and abilities to stay in the homes they love while they grow older. Unless you’ve experienced one of life’s setbacks such as a broken leg or stroke––or know someone who has––you probably haven’t given much thought to steep stairs, narrow doorways, dimly lit hallways or high countertops.

Today’s innovative design techniques, materials and technology make it possible to adapt spaces without sacrificing aesthetics for function. Universal design lets you keep your style AND make your home safer, more comfortable and easier to navigate.

Whether you’re considering renovating your existing home or building a new one, let us help you start planning now for later!

What’s on your coffee table?

All of your accessories look about the same size.

You use it to store one or more piles of magazines.

It’s the place to show how eclectic your tastes are — from Grandma’s cut-glass vase to the folk art statues you brought home from Mexico.

Guests have to move your “display” to put down their coffee cup or wine glass.

You can’t wait to add to your pile of coffee-table books.

If any of these fit you, it’s no wonder your coffee table doesn’t look like those you see in magazines and show houses. So what’s the secret to a great-looking tablescape?

Joyce Weakley Shore, former president of the American Society of Interior Designers, Florida South Chapter, took us to a home on the Las Olas Isles in Fort Lauderdale to let us in on the “Trade Secrets.”

Place it like the pros. The table should be spaced about 18 inches from the sofa or chairs. Put it close enough to make it easy for a guest to put down a drink but far enough away to prevent banging a leg when the guest gets up.

Get it together. When you’re shopping for accessories, look for unity. The key is repetition — of color, texture or material. For our traditional table, Shore repeated the gold and burgundy color scheme in the book bindings and the topiary’s container. Although she used three different-shaped vases on the contemporary table, they are unified with the same color orange. Shore says the same shapes wouldn’t work if they were orange, pink and green.

“You are looking for things that add more interest to the eye,” she says. “We no longer look at things like we used to. We are bombarded by images on TV and the Internet. Using the same color with different objects makes you stop and think.”

Scale it right. If the tabletop is small, the accessories also should be smaller scale so they don’t overwhelm the space. The idea is to have enough room on the table so someone doesn’t have to move anything to put down a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Items can be bulkier on a larger table.

Growing up. Many designers think the visitor’s eye should be brought up from the low coffee table with a tall item. Shore used a topiary in her traditional example. If you use a tall item, be sure it isn’t in the way of seeing another person in the conversation area.

Find a focal point. Most coffee-table arrangements have a focal point — the item that attracts your attention because of its size, interesting color or shape. The three orange vases in the contemporary example appear as one and become the focal point.

The odd-number rule. While Shore was looking for props for the photo shoot, she overheard two women in their late 20s or early 30s pondering the purchase of accessories. One of the women was holding two glass objects.

“You know you have to have three,” her friend said. “I read it somewhere.”

“Why do I have to have three?” the other woman said. “It doesn’t make any sense.”

Whatever you do, it should make sense. You can use pairs if you like, Shore says. Just think about what you are doing. The odd-number rule comes from the fact that people are used to seeing items in pairs, Shore says, adding that different shapes, sizes and odd numbers provide contrast. Look for varying ways to create a look. For example, she found three similar glass containers in different sizes and layered them with shells and stones.

Off with the books. Shore suggests finding another spot for your magazines, and she doesn’t like using coffee-table books as an accessory.

“I don’t like to have them there,” she says. “It’s too predictable. And we are looking for what isn’t predictable.”

This estate residence in Boca Raton’s royal Palm Yacht and Country Club proves it. From the very beginning, the architect, builder and designer worked together to crate a home steeped in the charm and island flair of the West Indies.

….

Rounding out the trio of award-winning professionals was Fort Lauderdale-based interior designer Joyce Shore, who became part of the equation even earlier than the builder and architect. She had worked with the clients before, and they were eager for a repeat performance.

“I designed the interior of their home in Addison Reserve, so from the beginning of the Royal Palm project, I had a firm grasp on their tastes, their lifestyle, and the subtleties that would tailor the residence specifically to them. I worked very closely with Affiniti and Bloomfield, coordinating our efforts so that the architectural detailing, the overall floor plan, and the basic infrastructure would facilitate what I knew to be the clients’ ultimate interior design objectives. They wanted a seasoned look, as if the house had been there for a long time.”

The team worked smoothly together. “Each of us brought our own areas of expertise to the table, with the goals of completing the home on time, within budget, and according to the clients’ exact specifications,” Shore said.

Jack Tobin (D-Broward), Chairman of the House Committee on Business and Professional Regulation.

An active ASID officer and member for many years, Shore’s goals for the organization include improving communication both inside and outside ASID. “We want to educate the public about the value of using a professional interior designer, particularly an ASID designer.”

Shore, a resident of Ft. Lauderdale, is a licensed interior designer with Joyce Shore Interiors in Ft. Lauderdale. Before becoming an interior designer, she studied art education at Ohio State University and taught art in the public school system for five years. In 1978, she moved to Florida and decided to apply her art training to a related profession, interior design. After taking a variety of design courses, she passed the NCIDQ, a tough qualifying examination which is required for licensing in Florida—and for professional membership in ASID.

Among Shore’s current interior design projects are: a motel in Naples, FL; a condominium rehabilitation in Boca Raton; and several private residences. Her goal is to help clients create an environment that tastefully reflects their lifestyle. One of her particular interests is designing child and day care facilities.

Giving back to her profession and her community is important to Shore. She has shared her expertise with design students, teaching classes at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale. She also serves on the Community Appearance Board for the City of Ft. Lauderdale and is active with Covenant House and Handy, a guardian ad litem program.

The ASID Florida South Chapter, which represents more than 1,000 interior design professionals in South Florida, is dedicated to promoting design excellence through education, community involvement and partnership with industry and related professions.
